Objective. This study aims to better understand the linguistic experiences of Francophone patients within the healthcare systems of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Using an intersectional approach, it will examine how sociodemographic characteristics influence access to services and experiences of receiving care in French.

Methods. A sequential qualitative approach will combine a survey, semi-structured interviews, and care journey mapping. The survey will document participants’ profiles and healthcare utilization and will be used to build a diverse sample based on linguistic and sociodemographic characteristics and patterns of healthcare use. Interviews and journey mapping will provide an in-depth understanding of participants’ interactions with the healthcare system.

Expected Results. This study will provide a better understanding of Francophone patients’ linguistic experiences in relation to the language in which healthcare services are received. The findings will inform interventions aimed at improving access to linguistically appropriate care while considering inequities related to gender, age, socioeconomic status, and visible minority status.
